Per Buster Olney, if C.C. Sabathia becomes available, there's a good chance the Cubs would be aggressive. This would be a complete win-now move, as the North Siders would have to give up a lot of the farm in order for a 4-month rental, but could solidify the Cubs staff. Can you imagine having to face Zambrano and Sabathia a total of 4 times in a 7 game series?
On a more plausible note, SI.com's Jon Heyman has tossed out the Cubs as a possible landing spot if and when Kansas City's Gil Meche becomes available. Meche also has a much higher contract than his performance would most likely dictate, but would be aided by a move from the A.L. to the N.L., and would still be much cheaper than Sabathia would be should he sign any sort of extension.
